Sunday 16th December: U13 v Northleach

Another disappointingly slow start to the game gave Northleach a significant head-start and a good half time lead, although Ben pulled one goal back. The second half was a massive improvement, with all players working for each other, passing and tackling well. Goals from Will, Luke and another from Ben brought the scores level, before Dom gave the Wasps the lead. It was obviously disappointing to concede a late equaliser, but the second half was much more encouraging overall.

What we need to work on most is starting each game quickly and positively. If we give the opposition an early goal (or two), it is much harder to get back into the game (just ask Swindon Town!); concentrate on the way we played in the second half and aim to play that way throughout the match.

Matt's choice as player of the match was Jack, whilst the Coaches' award went to Lewis for taking over in goal at a tricky time and providing lots of positive encouragement from the back.

Squad: Matt R, Dan, Jack, Matt J, Dom, Will, Ben, Luke, Chris, Lewis, Oli H

Sunday 25th November: U13 v Lydiard Youth B

This friendly match provided some useful opportunities for players to try out some different positions. The first half was somewhat forgetable with a continuing need for all players to ensure that they are alert as soon as the match starts. The second half performance was much better, with five goals scored (by Oli P, Ben, Luke and Lewis).

Squad: Toby, Oli B, Lewis, Oli H, Matt J, Chris, Ben, Will, Oli P, Luke and Dom

Player Discipline

I am attaching the link to the Club's Code of Conduct: http://www.wanboroughwasps.com/docs/WJFC_01_PT_Code_of_Conduct_for_Players_03.pdf

Please can all players ensure that they understand the importance of abiding by this Code, without letting themselves and their team mates down. We will have no hesitation in removing players from a match (or from a training session) where dissent is shown towards officials or other instances of behaviour that are considered unacceptable. Hopefully this will stop the increasingly verbal and physical reactions that are occurring from a minority of players, and also help to improve the sportsmanship marks that the team is being awarded (which were the lowest in the division for September).

Sunday 11th November: U13 v Cirencester Town B (with photos)

Some excellent passing and finishing in the first half saw Wanborough take a commanding lead, with goals from Ben (two), Oli P, Matt R and Lewis, but this did not tell the true story as the half was actually quite an even contest with some excellent saves from Toby.

Will opened his account for the season with two goals in the second half, with Ben completing his hat trick from the penalty spot. Cirencester also got three goals of their own during the second half, so the final score was an excellent 8-3.

There were plenty of positives to take from the game, notably the excellent passing, defending and shooting. The main downside was the need for all players to accept the referee's decisions without argument; all players are reminded of the code of conduct by which they should abide.

The whole team played well today, which made the decision for the Coaches' award difficult; but Oli H was the deserved winner for some excellent defensive work over the last couple of games. The Captain's award was given to Will by Oli P.

Squad: Toby, Jonathon, Oli B, Matt J, Dom, Oli H, Luke, Lewis, Matt R, Jack, Ben, Will, Oli P

Sunday 4th November: U13 v Highworth Juniors

An entertaining match saw the Wasps secure their first win of the season. This was an excellent team performance and was a complete contrast to the previous week, with lots of sound tackling and good passing. Dom gave us the lead in the first half, before Highworth equalised early in the second. Goals from Matt R and Ben recovered the lead for Wanborough and although Highworth pulled a goal back, they could not find another way through the Wanborough defence, with all the defenders (Dom, Oli H, Matt J, Jack, Oli B and Dan) making some vital tackles to leave the final score 3-2.

Squad: Toby, Dom, Oli B, Matt J, Dan, Ben, Jack, Chris, Matt R, Oli P, Will, Lewis, Oli H and Jonathon

Dan's choice for the captain's player of the match was Dom, whilst the coaches' choice was Chris.

U13 Training

Training will take place at Zurich on Thursday at 7pm. I'd like all players to ensure that they attend the training sessions (apart from the two who are unable to), as this will help the players to build on their team play and fitness. In order to help the coaches to plan the sessions more effectively, I'd like to know if there are any players who are unable to attend training for any reason each week. This will mean that we have a good idea of the numbers before the session starts. Please help us by letting us know as soon as possible if your son is unable to attend (a text or e-mail will be fine).

Sunday 28th October: U13 v Coleshill

This was a disappointing match for many reasons, not least because of the false start in the morning, which clearly disrupted the players' concentration. Unfortunately this was the first game this season when we didn't deserve something from the match and there are a number of areas that we will look to improve on:
  • We need to work better as a team, to make it easier for each other by improving the movement, passing more accurately, knowing what our positions should be, linking better across the whole pitch;
  • The overall work-rate needs to be improved by all the players, chasing back to help in defence and using the spaces as we push forward to make the opposition's defence work hard; and
  • We need to show some more passion in our tackling - being first to the ball and really wanting to win it.

It was good to see Luke get a late consolation goal, which resulted from one of the occasions when we did pass the ball about well. Two defenders received the awards for battling hard throughout the game: Jack was Ben's choice as captain and Dan was the coaches' choice.

Sunday 14 October: U13 v Lydiard Youth B

Yet another tight, competitive match, where the Wasps almost grabbed a late equaliser but instead conceeded twice as they pushed forwards at the end. It was a good team display and, without any substitutes available and Luke having to withdraw in the second half, everyone battled right to the end. The goals were scored by Oli P in the first half, with two from Matt R in the second. Chris awarded the Captain's trophy to Oli P, whilst the Coaches' choice was given to Oli B, but could have been anyone after some magnificant displays.

Team for the match was: Chris (capt), Dan, Dominic, Jack, Luke, Matt J, Matt R, Oli B, Oli H, Oli P and Will.

Sunday 7 October: U13 v Coleshill

There are always plenty of goals between Wanborough and Coleshill (at least eight goals every time we have played them) and this match was no exception!  Coleshill took an early two goal lead, before Wanborough came back through Chris, a screamer from Dominic and a well-worked team goal.  Coleshill levelled before Wanborough added another.

In the second half, Coleshill edged it, scoring three goals with Wanborough getting just one more, with Matt R getting his hat trick.  The whole team played well, with crucial saves from Toby, decisive tackles from Oli B, Matt J, Dan, Dominic and Jonathon.  Jack, Chris, Matt R, Oli P, Will, Oli H and Luke all worked hard in midfield and attack.

Dominic chose Oli P as the Captain's player of the match, whilst the Coaches' award went to Matt R.

Wasps U13s - The first month

September started with an early clash against South Swindon.  There was the excitement of two penalty saves in the first few minutes, before Wanborough created a host of chances.  In spite of taking a good half time lead, with goals from Jack, Oliver P and Matt R, South Swindon pulled back the deficit in the second half with two late goals to share the points.  Luke (as captain on his birthday) chose Toby as the Captain's Man of the Match, whilst Matt J was the choice of the Coaches.

The second match was a touch cup game against Cirencester A.  Everyone battled very hard to keep the score at 0-1 at half time.  The second half was notable for a great solo goal from Ben (who was the Coaches' Man of the Match).  Matt R was Toby's choice for the Captain's award.

The third game was against Greenmeadow B at a blustery Lydiard Park.  Matt R twice gave the Wasps a lead in the first half, but Greenmeadow equalised each time, before grabbing a late winner in a very evenly fought match.  Jonathon chose Matt R as the Captain's player of the Match, whilst Jack had another excellent game to receive the Coaches' trophy.

Last game of the month was another close match, with Croft Juniors B stealing a two goal lead at half time.  There were plenty of goal mouth chances in the second half, but no further goals.  Dom had a strong game at right-back to receive the Coaches' award and Jack received the Captain's trophy from Will this time around.
